February is Children’s National Dental Health Month, a perfect time to shine a spotlight on the importance of oral health and the critical role orthodontics plays in supporting a lifetime of healthy smiles. At ARCH Orthodontics, we’re passionate about helping children build a strong foundation for their oral health. One of the best ways to do this is through an early orthodontic evaluation. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children see an orthodontist by age 7, and here’s why.
Early orthodontic evaluations allow us to identify and address potential issues before they become more complex. For example, we can guide the growth of the jaw to ensure proper alignment, create space for crowded teeth, correct bite issues and capitalize on timing of growth spurts to facilitate the best type of care, all of which are factors often not considered by your child’s pediatric or general dentist. Straightening teeth and aligning bites can have profound effects on overall health, including improved chewing efficiency, better oral hygiene, and a reduced risk of tooth decay and gum disease.
Straight teeth are also directly correlated to reduced risk of periodontal disease, which is a proven cause and/or contributing factor to diabetes, cardiovascular disease, respiratory illness, and preterm birth and low birth rates due to systemic inflammation.
Improved Chewing Efficiency
A properly aligned bite isn’t just about achieving a picture-perfect smile. It’s also essential for effective chewing, which plays a critical role in digestion. When teeth don’t fit together correctly, it can lead to inefficient chewing, causing strain on the jaw muscles and making it harder to break down food. Orthodontic treatment ensures that children’s teeth and jaws work harmoniously, setting the stage for optimal nutrition and overall health.
Enhanced Oral Hygiene
Crooked or crowded teeth can make brushing and flossing a challenge, leaving hard-to-reach areas where plaque can accumulate. This increases the risk of cavities and gum disease. By straightening teeth and creating proper spacing, orthodontic treatment makes it easier for children to maintain excellent oral hygiene. A clean and healthy smile reduces the risk of dental issues and builds confidence in young patients.
Reduced Risk of Tooth Decay and Gum Disease
Misaligned teeth and poor bite alignment can contribute to uneven wear and tear, leading to weak spots that are more susceptible to decay and fracture. Crowded teeth often trap food particles and bacteria, creating a breeding ground for cavities and gum disease. By addressing these concerns early, orthodontics protects teeth from long-term damage and helps ensure that children enjoy healthy smiles well into adulthood.
At ARCH Orthodontics, we are committed to making orthodontic care accessible and enjoyable for families. In honor of Children’s National Dental Health Month, we’re excited to offer our Winter Blues Special: $500 off orthodontic treatment. This special promotion is available through Friday, March 13, and is the perfect opportunity to invest in your child’s smile and oral health.
Together, we’ll create a customized plan to ensure your child’s smile is as healthy and beautiful as it can be. A healthy, confident smile is one of the greatest gifts you can give your child—and we’re here to make it happen!
