Fast Out of the Gate, Firm at the Back: Joyce Leads Westwood Past Hopkinton

Westwood Boys Hockey wasted no time kicking off the season, jumping straight into league play Saturday night and delivering a statement 2–0 win over TVL Large rival Hopkinton.
 
The Wolverines struck just 15 seconds into the opening period, as sophomore defenseman Caleb Fengler fired a quick, tight shot on net after a clean setup from Nolan Lewis and Matty Donovan. The early goal immediately set the tone and energized the home bench.
 
Less than 90 seconds later, Westwood was back on the scoreboard. This time it was sophomore defenseman Will Dempsey, who buried a rocket of a shot off a crisp cross-ice feed from freshman Ryan Romiza. In a remarkable opening sequence, Westwood scored two goals in under two minutes — both by sophomore defensemen — and both marking the first career varsity goals for Fengler and Dempsey. Romiza’s assist also stood as the first varsity point of his career.
 
After the fast start, Hopkinton settled in and began to push the pace, turning the game into an up-and-down battle as both teams shook off early-season rust. The physicality ramped up, and what followed was a showcase between the pipes.
 
Westwood senior goaltender Sean Joyce was outstanding, matching Hopkinton’s Colton Spavento save for save and delivering the biggest moments of the night. Joyce made a spectacular glove save on a point-blank chance as time expired at the end of the first period, preserving momentum for the Wolverines. His second highlight came on a Hopkinton 2-on-1, where Joyce flashed the leather across the crease to rob a streaking forward, freezing the puck and further frustrating the Hillers. The saves kept Westwood firmly in control and the energy tilted in the Wolverines’ favor.
 
As the game moved into the third period, Westwood leaned into its depth and physical play. The line of Sebi O’Brien, Morghan Cox, and Lucas Willette earned Coach Matt Sebet’s trust with strong late-game shifts, helping keep legs fresh and allowing Westwood to maintain its relentless pace while protecting the two-goal lead.
 
Defensively, the Wolverines were rock solid throughout, anchored by Brian Sullivan, Caleb Fengler, Will Dempsey, James Galvin, and Colin Johnson, who consistently won puck battles and limited Hopkinton’s clean looks.
 
The balanced effort allowed Westwood to close out the game confidently and open the season with a league shutout.
