Lacrosse Coverage, presented by Kristen Donahue: Sesselman, Stuehler Shine as Wolverines Take Down Nauset

Westwood Boys Lacrosse made the long trip to the Cape on Saturday afternoon to take on the Nauset Warriors, earning a hard-fought 12–9 win in a battle between two competitive programs.
 
Nauset, always a formidable opponent, provided a strong early-season test for the Wolverines — and Westwood answered right from the opening whistle.
 
The Wolverines came off the bus ready, jumping out to a 4–0 lead in the first quarter behind goals from senior captain Sam Cochran, junior Will Stuehler, senior captain Liam Williams, and Stuehler again to cap off a dominant start.
 
But Nauset responded.
 
The Warriors stormed back with four unanswered goals in the second quarter, capitalizing on ground balls, turnovers, and momentum to tie the game at 4–4.
 
Westwood didn’t flinch.
 
Liam Williams answered with a strong dodge and finish under the bar to regain the lead, and the teams traded goals the rest of the half. Will Sesselman scored late to send the game into halftime tied at 6–6.
 
The third quarter delivered as advertised, featuring three separate lead changes in a back-and-forth battle.
 
Nauset struck first to take a 7–6 lead, but just 12 seconds later, CJ Hancock responded off a faceoff win by Brett Baima, going straight down Broadway and ripping a shot into the back of the net to tie it up again.
 
Sesselman then gave Westwood the lead with a sharp short-side finish, but Nauset once again answered to even the score.
 
That’s when the Wolverines began to take control.
 
Sesselman struck again from X, finishing with authority on another short-side shot to give Westwood the lead and shift momentum. Stuehler followed with a strong dodge through traffic, finishing in the middle to extend the lead to two — a margin Westwood carried into the fourth quarter.
 
The final frame turned into a defensive battle, with both teams tightening up around the net, making key stops, and forcing turnovers.
 
Sesselman delivered a key goal midway through the fourth to push the lead to three, and as they had all day, the Wolverines answered every Nauset push. Greg Walsh added the final goal to seal the win on a strong lefty finish.
 
Sesselman led the offensive effort with four goals, while Stuehler added three goals of his own in a strong performance.
 
From there, Westwood closed it out in impressive fashion. With possession in the final minutes, the Wolverines executed a composed keep-away offense, controlling the clock and putting their stamp on the game.
 
While the offense was balanced and effective, the story was the defense.
 
In the second half alone, Westwood allowed just three goals against a high-powered Nauset offense. The unit was led by senior captain Ryan Williams, who was a constant presence, along with Ryan Owens who was causing turnovers and clearing all game, and JD Moerschel, as well as a cast of a relentless defensive midfielders including Greg Walsh, CJ Hancock, Mike Murphy, and Gianni Martucci. Jaden Pollack made big timely saves to preserve the lead down the stretch and help close out the effort for the Wolverines.
 
It was a complete team win — and one that made for a very enjoyable 1 hour and 45 minute bus ride home.
 
With the victory, Westwood improves to 5–1 on the season and will return home to take on Holliston on Thursday, April 16.
