Ferreira’s Late Heroics Lift Westwood Past Norwood in Boys Soccer Home Opener, Wolverines Remain Undefeated

The Westwood Boys Soccer team opened its 2025 campaign in thrilling fashion on Thursday night at Flahive, defeating cross-town rival Norwood, 2–1, behind a pair of goals from senior captain Trevor Ferreira. Ferreira’s game-winner came with just six minutes remaining, sending the home crowd into a frenzy and securing an early TVL Large victory for the Wolverines.
 
From the opening whistle, Westwood controlled possession and dictated the tempo of play. Much of their attack flowed through set pieces, where senior captain Lexi Michalacos served as the catalyst. His precise delivery on a corner midway through the first half found Ferreira at the back post, who rose above the defense to head it home for the game’s opening goal.
 
Norwood found an equalizer midway through the second half when a long, low shot from outside the box deflected through traffic and slipped into the net, giving the Mustangs a burst of momentum. But Westwood’s senior leadership quickly steadied the ship, pushing the pace and generating numerous chances. Norwood keeper John Campbell stood tall during the flurry, making several outstanding saves to keep the game tied.
 
The breakthrough finally came in the 74th minute, when another Michalacos corner — this time a lower flighted ball — caught Norwood off guard. Ferreira timed his run perfectly and redirected the cross with his right foot into the back of the net, breaking the deadlock and delivering the decisive strike.
 
Westwood’s defense did the rest, closing out the match with composure. Senior defender Ethan Buttner anchored the back line with a commanding performance, consistently breaking up attacks and winning key challenges. He was joined by George Stamatakos, Harrison Hayes, Jack Tateosian, Sam Cochran and Michael Ajamal, all of whom contributed to a stout defensive effort. In goal, senior Ansh Sattiraju was sharp, reading plays well and controlling possession with confident decisions under pressure.
 
Though Ferreira finished as the lone goal-scorer, the Wolverines’ balanced attack created opportunities throughout the night and dominated the possession battle — an encouraging sign in early league play.
Westwood (1–0, 1–0 TVL Large) will look to keep the momentum rolling when they host another league rival, Hopkinton, on Tuesday, September 9 at 6:00 p.m. at Flahive Field.
