Individuals Stand Out as Westwood Boys Track Battles Dedham

This Wednesday, Westwood took on the Dedham Marauders for the first meet of the season. Rain poured and temperatures dropped, but the meet was not without successes for the Wolverines.
 
Junior Shane MacDonald managed to snag a varsity point with a third place finish in the 400m (57.8), as did sophomore Colin Maxwell in the 800m (2:17). Captain Owen Cocchi was also able to secure second in the 800m (2:15). Unsurprisingly, Jayden Pillard took first in the 200m (23.3) followed by freshman Dominic Ellison in third (26.0).
 
In field events, Westwood showed impressive improvement, led by Coach Ed Lyons’ “Athlete of the Day” Morghan Cox, who took first in shotput (47’2”) and second in discus (136’4”). Reid Boger also got on the board with a second place javelin toss (140’0”). High jumpers Mairaj Humayon (5’8”) and Kielen McDonald (5’4”) placed first and third, respectively, as well.
 
While Westwood succumbed to the cold weather, getting swept in key events, the ferocious weather served as a lesson for future races: keep pushing through discomfort. Now the Wolverines look to take this experience and turn it into motivation back home in less than two weeks on April 10.
