Christen’s Corner – Once an Athlete, Always an Athlete

By: Christen Cadigan

For athletes, sports aren’t just games; they’re a way of life. Practices, games, team dinners, the constant push to get faster, stronger, better. Then, one day, it’s over. The season ends, the jersey goes in the closet, and you’re left wondering… now what?

I get it. I was a Division I tennis player at the University of Rhode Island. For years, my schedule revolved around matches, training, and teammates who felt like family. Then came “regular life,” and I quickly realized I needed a new way to channel that competitive energy and keep my sanity.

For me, the magic moment came when I found Orangetheory Fitness. The mix of strength training and cardio gave me the challenge I missed, plus the accountability of a team environment. Benchmarks like the 2000m row, 1-mile run, or 500m row scratch that itch for progress. There is something so satisfying about seeing your numbers improve and knowing the work you put in is paying off.

For any former athlete, strength training is key. It maintains muscle, supports bone health, boosts metabolism, and keeps the body ready for whatever is next, whether that is a marathon, triathlon, or a local adult league game. It is not just about lifting weights; it is about keeping that athlete’s edge sharp for life.

The discipline you built as an athlete never goes away. Find new outlets, set new benchmarks, and keep pushing because the athlete in you isn’t done competing.
