Westwood Girls Field Hockey welcomed the Bellingham Blackhawks to Flahive Field on Thursday night for a TVL Small matchup, and from the opening whistle, the Wolverines controlled the action on their way to an impressive 3-0 victory.

Westwood dominated possession from the start, applying extended pressure and consistently working the ball into dangerous scoring areas. The Wolverines broke through midway through the first quarter when Bridget Hughes made a series of nifty moves to advance the ball into the circle before finding Emma FitzPatrick. FitzPatrick did the rest, firing a hard, low shot into the back of the cage to give Westwood a 1-0 lead.

The pressure continued into the second quarter. Five minutes into the frame, Julie Hogan battled through traffic for a loose ball in front of the cage and finished the opportunity to double the Wolverines’ advantage.

Just four minutes later, Westwood struck again. Bella Gentile fired a hard shot from just outside the cage that found its way into the back of the net, giving the Wolverines a 3-0 lead that they would carry through the remainder of the night.

From start to finish, it was one of Westwood’s most complete performances of the season.

Offensively, the Wolverines never let up on their relentless pressure and attack, making it difficult for Bellingham to break out of its own end while repeatedly turning turnovers into transition opportunities. FitzPatrick, Hogan, Ellie Harrington, Ciara Shevory, Hughes, Maggie Ash, Claire and Emma Kenneally, Gentile and Lila Martin kept the pace going throughout the night and helped Westwood earn more than 10 penalty corners.

While the offense kept Bellingham on its heels, the Wolverines’ defense turned in perhaps its cleanest performance of the season.

Gillian Walsh, Abby Presley, Laine Hayes, Sadie O’Reilly, Eden Postizzi, Madeline Brown and Kelsey Vogelgesang were formidable on the back end, keeping the play in front of them and consistently making clean breakout passes to get Westwood moving in the other direction. Reese Lipton completed the effort in net as the entire defensive unit earned a well-deserved shutout.

The victory improves Westwood to 5-1-2 on the season. There won’t be much time to celebrate, as the Wolverines return to action Friday when they welcome Division 1 Bishop Feehan to the Westwood Multipurpose Field.
