Harrington’s Overtime Heroics Send Westwood Field Hockey To Elite 8

In a thrilling MIAA Division 2 girls field hockey playoff matchup, the No. 10 seed Westwood Wolverines went on the road Thursday night and stunned No. 7 Masconomet, punching their ticket to the Round of 8 in dramatic fashion and snapping Masco’s 19 game winning streak.
 
From the opening whistle, it was a defensive showcase. Ciara Shevory, Mary Lou Cocivera, Abby Presley, and Gillian Walsh anchored a disciplined backline in front of senior standout goalie, Moira Kenneally, who turned away every challenge from Masconomet’s relentless offensive attack.
 
Midfield star Bridget Hughes was the engine all night long — drawing double teams, battling for possession, and creating chances in transition. Her grit and tempo kept the Wolverines in rhythm through 60 minutes of regulation that ended in a hard-fought scoreless tie.
 
When the game moved to 7-on-7 overtime, it didn’t take long for the Wolverines to seize their moment. Just 22 seconds into the extra frame, Hughes jumped on a loose ball, weaved her way into open space, and threaded a perfect pass to Ellie Harrington on the back post. Harrington buried it — the biggest goal of her young career — as teammates stormed the field in jubilation.
 
With the 1-0 win, Westwood advances to the Round of 8, where they’ll face powerhouse No. 2 Nashoba (17-0-1) on Saturday, November 8 at 4:00 PM at Nashoba High School — a rematch of the 2021 State Championship showdown.
