Westwood was less than seven minutes away from their first win of the season when a power outage stopped play in their matchup with Medway. The game was suspended with Westwood leading 16-8 and will be resumed Saturday at 5pm.

The Wolverines and Mustangs were scoreless through the first half, but Westwood turned the tide early in the third quarter, when Shane Ramsdell forced a fumble that was recovered by Kaden Maloof in Medway territory. Chase Warren led Westwood on a drive to the end zone. Along the way, Warren connected with Jumaane South for a key first down and got strong running from Brendan Cengic. The Wolverines scored on fourth and goal from the one yard line, with Jack Button muscling across the goal line.

Another turnover kept Westwood in control, as Ryan McCabe forced a fumble on the kickoff, which was recovered by Button. The ensuing drive ended with Warren throwing an interception in the end zone to Jerry Desronvilles, but Medway was flagged for an illegal block on the return and thereby forced to start the drive inside their own five. On the first play from scrimmage, Keilan McDonald swallowed Medway’s Adam Spallone in the end zone, giving the Wolverines a 9-0 lead.

Early in the fourth quarter, Warren connected with McDonald for a 15-yard touchdown, making the score 16-0, but this time the home team responded. Mason Webb found Doug Dwyer in the back of the end zone for a touchdown, and the two-point conversion made it 16-8.

Medway forced a punt and had possession of the ball, with around six minutes to play, when the lights went out. After a twenty minute wait, the game was officially suspended and rescheduled for Saturday at Medway High School.

Update:

Play resumed Saturday at 5:00 p.m., and on the first play back, the ball got away from Medway quarterback Webb, eventually forcing the Mustangs into a fourth-and-31 and a punt.

The Medway defense responded by forcing Westwood into a three-and-out, giving the Mustangs the ball back with 4:02 remaining and one final opportunity to tie the game.

Starting from their own 20-yard line, Webb marched the Mustangs down the field, keeping the drive alive with several key third- and fourth-down conversions. Medway eventually reached the Westwood 26, where Webb connected with Jack Heavner for a 26-yard touchdown to pull the Mustangs within two, 16-14.

Westwood’s defense bent but didn’t break. On the ensuing two-point conversion, defensive coordinator John Chisholm dialed up a perfectly timed blitz that disrupted Webb’s timing and prevented him from finding an open receiver, forcing an incompletion and preserving the Wolverines’ lead.

Medway attempted an onside kick, but Alex Blaney secured it cleanly for Westwood, allowing the Wolverines to run out the remaining clock and seal their first victory of the season.

With the win, Westwood improves to 1-3 and will open league play next Friday night on the road against crosstown rival Norwood. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
