Saturday night, the Westwood Girls Hockey team played in a game that was bigger than hockey. The Wolverines took the ice in honor of Quinn Dyson, a Westwood alumnus from the class of 2019 who tragically passed away due to a spinal cord injury. The game also served as a fundraising event for Journey Forward, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting individuals who have suffered spinal cord injuries.

Westwood faced a tough opponent in the Duxbury Dragons, who were recently ranked No. 3 in the MIAA power rankings. With Duxbury’s high-speed play, quick passing, and aggressive forecheck, the game proved to be highly competitive from the start. A major highlight of the first period was the incredible goaltending by Jennifer Lin, whose spectacular saves kept Westwood in the game and allowed the teams to head into the first intermission scoreless at 0–0.

In the second period, the Wolverines came out fired up, determined to generate momentum and get on the scoreboard. Duxbury continued to apply heavy pressure in Westwood’s defensive zone, but Lin stood strong once again. After some key saves and motivating words from the coaches, Westwood capitalized on an opportunity late in the period. Defenseman Avery Hughes fired a hard shot from the blue line, and Livvy Hicks perfectly tipped the puck into the net, giving Westwood a 1–0 lead heading into the end of the second period. Frustrated but confident, the Dragons prepared to respond.

As the third period began, it was clear the game was far from over. The energy in the arena was electric, and both teams were ready for a battle. The line of Abby Presley, Maggie Ash, and Bridget Lewis generated a relentless forecheck against the Duxbury defense, creating multiple scoring chances with quick passes and sustained pressure. However, momentum briefly shifted when Duxbury capitalized on a shaky Westwood shift, tying the game 1-1.

Refusing to back down, the Wolverines knew they needed to respond. Late in the third period, Justine Connelly fired a shot on net, and Hicks jumped on the rebound, scoring her second goal of the game. The Westwood bench erupted in celebration.

With just over a minute remaining, Duxbury pulled their goalie for a 6-on-5 advantage. The tension was palpable as the crowd roared, but Westwood played a defensively sound game and kept the puck out of their net until the final buzzer.

The game ended with a 2–1 victory for Westwood, marking their biggest and toughest win of the season, and a powerful tribute to Quinn Dyson. The Wolverines, now 7-1 on the season, will be back in action Tuesday, January 13 when they host Franklin at the Canton Ice House
