Westwood Girls Roll Into Elite Eight With Resounding Win Over Martha’s Vineyard

The top-ranked Westwood Girls Hockey team flexed its muscle Sunday night, spreading the scoring around in a dominant effort against Martha’s Vineyard. The 6-0 Wolverines win sets up a highly-anticipated rematch with TVL rival Medfield in the MIAA Quarterfinal Round.
 
Westwood’s well-rounded effort was kick-started by Maggie Ash, who used her athleticism to assure a puck cleared from Westwood’s zone wouldn’t lead to an icing call, adjusting her body to corral the puck and bring it into the offensive zone. Seconds later, Erin Carolan’s shot on net from the left point deflected home off a defender, giving Westwood a 1-0 first period lead.
 
Ash continued her hot start, getting on the board moments later, showcasing her talent and stick-handling, burying a breakaway opportunity to put the Wolverines up 2-0.
 
The Vineyarders responded with a solid counter in the second period, holding Westwood at bay while generating some shots on goaltender Jennifer Lin, who notched her 12th shutout of the season. With 2:45 to play in the second, the Wolverines put together their best odd-man rush of the game, taking advantage of their only power play opportunity and capitalizing with a goal from Livvy Hicks, assisted by the Erins – Gannon and Carolan.
 
That hard-fought period sparked an offensive outburst in the third, as Westwood scored twice in the first 2:03. Avery Hughes sniped a shot from the right side to make it 4-0, followed by a snap shot from Justine Connelly that almost ripped a hole in the back of the net to balloon the lead to 5-0.
 
After forcing a goalie change, Westwood finished the scoring just four minutes later, as Ash lit the lamp for the second time on the night, pinpointing a rocket to the top right corner, ricocheting the puck off the right post and in to make it 6-0.
 
Lin’s shutout was clinched with help from Gannon, who brilliantly lifted a Vineyarder’s stick as she attempted to capitalize on an open net. Gannon’s play was a perfect example of how a shutdown effort is a true team achievement.
 
Westwood, now 21-1 on the season, advances to face Medfield (15-8) in a rematch of last year’s semifinal matchup, which was won by the Big Blue. Medfield advanced Sunday with a 3-2, double overtime win over Nauset.
