From Hanson’s Heel to Gannon’s Goal: Westwood Wins in Stoppage Time

The Westwood Girls Soccer team delivered a dramatic finish Tuesday night, earning a 1–0 victory over Medway on a stoppage-time goal from senior Erin Gannon. The win moves the Wolverines further up the TVL standings and gave them another signature moment in an already memorable season.

Before kickoff, Westwood honored senior captain Izzy Hanson for becoming the program’s all-time points leader. Hanson was presented with a signed game ball from her teammates — the very ball from her sophomore year when she scored four goals in a game against Bellingham, setting another program record.

Fittingly, Hanson played a pivotal role in setting up the decisive goal. After Medway’s final corner kick was cleared, the Wolverines quickly transitioned into attack. Hanson, pressured by two defenders at midfield, delivered a brilliant back-heel pass into open space for Lindsey Bannister, who used her speed to advance into the final third. Bannister then found Gannon at the top of the box, and the senior made a sharp move onto her left foot before firing low past the keeper for the game-winner — a strike reminiscent of her highlight finish against Hopkinton last season.

Up until that moment, the Medway goalkeeper had frustrated Westwood with several key saves, while the Wolverines also rattled the posts multiple times.

Coach Seth Lucash praised his defensive unit for keeping the game scoreless, crediting Avery Boehm, Emma Lu, Veneta Stamatakos, Olivia Mason, Madisyn Travers, and Olivia Shea for their discipline and execution, along with goalkeeper Sofia Bertone, who recorded timely stops when it mattered the most to secure her third shutout in eight matches.
