The snow has finally melted off the track, which means outdoor track season is bound to begin. Coming off winter training, some runners have marked themselves as watch-worthy, especially those coming off of their success at New Balance Indoor Nationals just two weeks ago.

Susannah Rockers, a junior and year-round track star at WHS is looking forward to the upcoming season. She competed in the triumphant national-qualifying sprint medley alongside Hailey Cashman, Lindsey Bannister and Maeve Gavin. These four are quite the powerful quad and are destined to channel their energy into the outdoor season. Rockers shares her input on the upcoming season:

“Our girls and boys teams are both looking motivated and strong going into the season, and it is very exciting to get to see new and returning athletes joining! We have a very motivated group of athletes who are each excited to work hard to push themselves and the others around them, and we are really looking forward to our first dual meet coming in early April. All of the athletes are very determined to grow, lead, and improve, and we are very appreciative of our incredible coaches who are so dedicated to helping us expand as individuals on and off the track and put in so much work for us. Additionally, our girls Sprint Medley Relay is coming from just competing at New Balance Nationals and are all very excited to continue to train hard this spring.”

As the alternate for the medley, Laila Elliott-Lewis has established herself as another athlete to be watching during her final season with Westwood Track. Two dedicated sophomores, Ciara Chi and Violet Gavin, run with Westwood Track all year-round and have seen large improvements in their performances while also contributing to the positive team dynamic. Cara Sullivan, who flourished during the Cross Country season is looking to continue her success with the outdoor team as well.

Arianna Aiello recently put her name on the map by placing second in the Freshman/Sophomore State Invitational for shotput; she threw an outstanding 32 ’08”, a personal PR for Aiello. Her success as an underclassman shows promising improvements as she enters the outdoor season and the following years on the team.

Not only are these girls top athletes, but they also bring good vibes to practice and meets. Their season opening meet against Dedham, on April 1, is one to watch as these athletes are looking to shatter school records and establish new names for themselves as soon as the pistol fires.
