Healthy Eating: August, 2025

By: Matt LaSpisa

August is a month of transition – still packed with summer flavor, but nudging us toward the structure of back-to-school and busy routines. It’s the perfect time to double down on healthy habits that are simple, sustainable, and seasonal.

Start with hydration. After a summer of hot days and outdoor activity, your body needs replenishment. Don’t wait to feel thirsty. Infuse your water with fresh herbs like mint or basil, slices of citrus, or seasonal berries to make hydration more enticing.

Next up: local produce. August in New England is a goldmine, with corn, zucchini, heirloom tomatoes, eggplant, peaches, and blueberries all at their peak. Try a simple grilled veggie platter tossed in olive oil, or a peach and tomato salad with a light vinaigrette. Keep it colorful; variety isn’t just pretty, it’s nutritious.

As routines pick back up, start prepping a little. Cook grains like farro or quinoa ahead of time. Chop veggies and store them in containers. This way, quick meals don’t become drive-thru meals.

Finally, be kind to yourself. Healthy eating doesn’t have to mean “perfect” eating. Enjoy that summer ice cream run, but balance it with intentional choices elsewhere in the day. Small steps lead to big results.

Stay cool, stay nourished, and I’ll catch you next month. Eat right and keep moving!
