Protecting Your Smile: How to Prevent and Handle Cracked Teeth

By: Dr. Yali Lou, DMD, MDS, PhD, C

At iLove Dental Care, our mission is to keep your smile healthy and vibrant. One issue that often concerns our patients is cracked teeth—an inconvenience that can lead to serious discomfort and dental complications if not managed properly. There are some things you should know, and things you should avoid to prevent cracking your teeth, but also some steps to take if it happens to you.

Prevention: How to Keep Your Teeth Safe

Avoid Chewing Hard Objects: One of the most common ways teeth get cracked is by chewing on hard objects such as ice, pens, or un-popped popcorn kernels. While it might seem harmless, the excessive pressure can cause small fractures in your enamel. Don’t use your teeth as tools.

Protect Your Teeth During Sports: If you participate in contact sports, wearing a mouthguard is essential. A properly fitted mouthguard can absorb the impact and prevent cracks or fractures from occurring.

Manage Teeth Grinding: Teeth grinding, or bruxism, is a common issue, especially under stress. The constant grinding can weaken the teeth and lead to cracks. If you suspect you’re grinding your teeth, talk to us about a night guard or other ways to reduce grinding.

Maintain Good Oral Hygiene: Regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups help keep your teeth strong and free from decay. Cavities and weakened enamel can increase the risk of cracks.

What to Do If You Crack a Tooth

Even with the best precautions, accidents can happen. Here’s what you should do if you crack a tooth:

Rinse and Protect: If you experience a cracked tooth, rinse your mouth with warm water to clean the area. Avoid using hot or cold water, as this can cause discomfort. If there are any sharp edges, cover them with dental wax or sugarless gum to protect your mouth from cuts or irritation.

Seek Immediate Care: It’s crucial to see a dentist as soon as possible if you suspect a cracked tooth. Delaying treatment can lead to further complications, including infection or more extensive damage. We always prioritize emergencies when patients call our office.

Manage Pain: Over-the-counter pain relievers can help manage discomfort until you see a dentist. Avoid chewing on the affected side and stick to soft foods to minimize pain and avoid aggravating the crack.

Follow Your Dentist’s Advice: Once you visit us, we will assess the extent of the damage and recommend the best course of action. Following our recommendations and treatment plan will ensure the best outcome for your dental health.

We see and treat a lot of issues at iLove Dental Care. By taking preventative measures and knowing how to respond, you can protect your teeth and ensure they stay in top condition.
