Time on the playground is more than just fun: play is essential to children’s development and boosts cognitive, physical, emotional, and social well-being.
With these truths close to our hearts, a new, parent-led initiative is underway to revitalize the playground at the Sheehan Elementary School. Fully incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit, the Sheehan Playground Committee’s mission is to create a safe and vibrant space where children, families, and community members can come together to play, learn, and grow.
With its proximity to the town soccer fields as well as baseball and softball fields, the Sheehan playground is highly utilized by families across Westwood. We are excited to bring contemporary equipment to this site for children throughout our town – and beyond – to enjoy.
The school administration continues its district-wide facilities study, and its outcomes will naturally take time to implement. By redirecting this project to the parent community, we can mobilize more quickly to modernize the Sheehan playground. The Sheehan Playground Committee has collaborated with town administration and will continue to coordinate efforts as we bring this project to fruition.
We are excited to build a playground that inspires creativity, fosters connection, and enriches our community for generations to come.
To get involved or learn more, please visit SheehanPlayground.org and please plan to join us at our Playgroundpalooza, scheduled for May 4 at 10am. We will feature a Stacey Peasley concert, raffle, silent auction, and more — all to support a new playground for Sheehan School.
