Softball Coverage, presented by APR Physical Therapy: Seniors Celebrated As Norwood and Westwood Battle Under the Lights

Mia Poles, Mady McMann and Abby Johnson were honored before Wednesday’s game, and the Wolverines battled hard with Norwood before falling 12-8 on Senior Night under the lights at Morrison Field in Islington.
 
Head Coach Caroline Mitchell led the pregame ceremony, paying tribute to her three seniors and setting the stage for a special night. Westwood softball alums Bridget Mulkeen, Sasha Marino and Dahlia Leyden were all in attendance to share in the celebration, and they were entertained by an engaging back-and-forth battle.
 
Westwood jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning behind the power of a triple from Brooke Benger, who knocked in Mia French and Johnson.
 
Norwood answered with four runs in the second to tie the score, thanks to hits from Jackie Powers and Maddie McKee, a sacrifice fly from Lilliana Cordani and a single from Maureen Larkee. The Mustangs added two runs in the third to take a 6-4 lead.
 
Westwood battled back in the third, drawing within one thanks to an RBI single from Poles, who scored Izzy Walsh to make it 6-5. The Wolverines took the lead in the fourth when Julia Tartufo walked followed by singles from French and Johnson that led to runs and an 7-6 Wolverines lead.
 
Norwood took advantage of three walks and two hits in the fifth inning to score five runs and take the lead they would never relinquish. Once again, Larkee singled sharply, followed by a line shot down third from Sarah Randall that made it 11-7.
 
Westwood drew within three when French doubled to start the sixth and was brought home on a fielders choice.
 
Larkee put the finishing touches on a stellar night at the plate when she laced a shot to right field that got past French and ended up being a solo home run to finish the scoring. Larkee finished 4-5 with four RBIs and two runs scored for the Mustangs.
 
Alexis Cahill did an admirable job in the circle for Westwood against a tough hitting lineup, striking out nine batters in seven innings.
