Dental Arts of Westwood Athlete of the Month: Trevor Ferreira

Trevor Ferreira completed his senior season by earning TVL All-Star honors. We exchanged a Q&A shortly after the Wolverines wrapped up a successful season that included a trip to the playoffs.
 
We’ve written about the very tight and very large senior Class of 2026 soccer players. What was special and unique about your senior class?
 
I believe our senior class was very special this year. The team had a total of 16 seniors out of our 21 players on the roster. I think since we have all been playing together for so long, whether that was in games or just getting together at the field, we had a strong team bond. The large number of seniors not only allowed us to be physically dominant, but it also gave us the edge against our opponents who didn’t have the same team chemistry we did.
 
What are your first memories of playing soccer? How and why did you fall in love with the sport?
 
My first memories of playing soccer were in my own backyard, kicking the ball around with my dad after he got back from work. My dad introduced me to soccer at such a young age and taught me everything he knew about the sport as I grew up. He got me to be as passionate and competitive about the sport as I am today.
 
At what point did you have to make a more significant commitment to become an excellent player? What steps did you take?
 
Soccer has always been a big part of my identity. I played club soccer throughout my elementary and middle school years, where I was fully committed to the sport, driving all over the state for games and practices. It was never really a question to me about my commitment to the sport; I always wanted to play at the highest level I could up until high school. I decided to stop playing club soccer and play for the high school team my freshman year. This forced me to train a lot on my own and stay disciplined to make sure I kept improving over the years.
 
What would be the advice you give to younger players who want to play at the highest level in high school?
 
The best advice I can give to younger players is to keep your head up. There are going to be times when you feel like you deserve to make a higher team or get more playtime. Instead of holding a grudge, control what you can by working harder to prove you deserve a spot on that team or more minutes than you are getting.
 
You and Ethan Buttner were both named TVL All-Stars and Eastern Mass All-Stars. How did you complement each other on the pitch?
 
Ethan and I have played soccer together our whole lives. We were on the same club team growing up, and we both played town soccer as well. All of this time playing together helped us this year because we were constantly aware of where the other was on the field and what they were going to do. One of my favorite plays all season was in our senior night vs Dedham, where he sent me a 40-yard through ball over their back line for me to run onto and score. I think that play sums up the kind of chemistry we have on the field.
 
What game will you remember the most from your time playing at Westwood High School?
 
There are so many games I will remember for the rest of my life from my time playing for Westwood. But I think the one that I will remember the most will be our playoff game vs Billerica last year. The atmosphere with my friends in the crowd, along with the goal I had to tie the game up, and even the feeling of defeat after the loss in penalties, all together are what made this game so special to me.
 
What’s next for you after graduating from Westwood in June?
 
I’m looking to attend the business school at a big college. I applied to a lot of schools, so we’ll see where I end up, but hopefully somewhere with a good sports program. I’m also hoping to continue playing soccer in college, whether that’s on a club team or just an intramural team.
 
Who is your funniest teammate?
 
There were definitely a lot of funny teammates this year, but I think I have to give this one to Dylan Kaplan. Not only was he constantly keeping the team spirit up, but he also worked really hard this season. It was nice to see him earn some minutes, score a goal, and get a few assists this year to help contribute to the team’s success.
 
What do you foresee for the future of the Westwood program?
 
I think the future of Westwood soccer is promising. Even though we lost a large amount of seniors this year, we have a lot of underclassmen ready to step in and take our places. We had so many kids try out this year for a spot in the program, which was great to see. There is definitely an abundance of talent within the program, and I am confident in our ability to develop these players for the future years with such good coaches available.
