Fenton Notches 100th Kill of Season In Westwood’s Thrilling Win over Norwood

On a night when the Norwood Volleyball program hosted its “Dig Pink” fundraiser to benefit the fight against breast cancer, Westwood held off a furious rally and got out of town with a 3-1 win. The night was highlighted by Lulu Fenton’s 100th kill of her sophomore season.
 
A very tight first set was won by Westwood thanks to a number of aces and kills. Alex Zafiropoulos, in for a sick Tav Lodovico at setter, Livy Leyden, Mia Steinmetz and Avery Herlihy each had aces, while Fenton, Veronica Reeves, Steinmetz and Leyden all joined the kill parade. The set was tied seven times, and Westwood opened a four-point lead twice, but that’s as wide as the margin got as the Wolverines narrowly escaped, 25-22.
 
Westwood kept the foot on the gas in the second set, thanks to the outstanding play of Reeves at the net and a strong finish. Sitting on an 11-10 lead, the Wolverines forced a side-out and rattled off three offensive points, thanks to an ace from Fenton and two dynamite plays from Reeves – one block and one kill – that made it 15-10. Anna Beaumont also delivered a number of key digs as Westwood built the lead. After a timeout, Norwood rallied to draw within one, but Westwood scored 10 of the next twelve points to take the set. Three consecutive aces from Steinmetz finished off a 25-16 set win.
 
Norwood responded with a strong third set, storming out to a 22-7 lead as Westwood sent some shots long and others into the net, while the Mustangs finished off some impressive kills. It was during this set that Fenton recorded her 100th kill of the season, prompting the bench to unfurl a “100 Kills” banner to commemorate the moment. The Wolverines did outscore Norwood 9-3 down the stretch, but the deficit was too much to overcome as the Mustangs won the set 25-16.
 
The fourth set was electric, with both teams putting together incredible rallies. Westwood ran off eight straight points with Steinmetz serving to open a 10-3 lead, and seemed in control when the score ballooned to 21-14. Norwood then won nine of the next 11 points, igniting the crowd as they tied the score at 23. A serve that went long gave the serve back to Westwood, and Leyden delivered an ace to seal the win 25-23.
 
With the victory, Westwood improves to 8-5. The Wolverines hit the road Friday for a date in Methuen, a solid Division 1 program.
