With Bader Gymnasium adorned in pink and baked goods and raffle items packing the lobby, the Westwood Volleyball team hosted another successful Dig Pink! night to raise money for the fight against breast cancer. The $1700 raised Wednesday, which will be donated to the Triple Negative Breast Cancer Program at Mass General Hospital, specfically honored Erin Darcy, a friend of head coach JC Whalen, who passed away this year.
As the game got underway, the Wolverines witnessed firsthand the cohesion, impressive play and teamwork of a Canton squad that played its best match of the season, according to head coach Pat Cawley. Canton took the match in straight sets, 25-13, 25-23 and 25-17.
Westwood fell behind early as Canton seized control of the first set. Chloe Dubuisson was strong at the net, frequently matched by Livy Leyden, who delivered a block and a pair of kills in the first set. The Wolverines called a pair of timeouts to slow the Bulldogs momentum, but Canton took set one, 25-13.
The second set was the most competitive of the match, highighted by some outstanding kills from Narintra Kamolratanapiboon. Avery Herlihy also delivered a kill during the back and forth battle, and Anna Beaumount made the save of the night, keeping a point alive by sprinting far beyond the endline to save an errant shot. The set was tied 15-15 and Canton rolled off five straight points, but Westwood rallied to draw within one, at 24-23, thanks to a powerful kill from Lulu Fenton. Canton scored the decisive point to take the set 25-23 and claim a 2-0 lead.
Kamolratanapiboon was strong, once again, in the third set, and Mia Steinmetz made an outstanding play to keep a rally alive and draw Westwood within one at 11-10. Veronica Reeves and Steinmetz delivered kills that kept things competitive and birthday girl Samara Maroun was consistently involved in the action from her libero position. Canton’s Michaela Singleton, Caitlyn Reynolds, Addison Connor and Erin Bigham all contributed to a solid set as the Bulldogs sealed the win 25-17.
Westwood returns to action Friday, with a critical road match against Ashland scheduled for 6:30pm
